 Cabbage:

Cabbage is a vegetable .It is a leafy green, red white colored plant .It is grown as an annual vegetable crop for its dense-leafy heads. Cabbage is the wild plant which is domesticated .It is belongs to the broccoli and cauliflower family. Its shape is round and composed of leaf layers.

      Cabbage weights from 500 to 1000 grams .Green cabbages are found commonly in the markets. Cabbages can be grown large in size, for example in 2012,the weight of cabbage was 62.71 kilograms. It was the heaviest one. Cabbage is a rich source of vitamin k , vitamin C and dietary fiber.

 History:                  

Although is difficult to fix cabbage history.It has an extensive history. It is quite difficult to find out the origin of cabbage but possibility is there, it is found originally in Britain and continental Europe.

  Perhaps cabbage was domesticated later in history like Eastern crops such as lentils and summer  wheat.

Different varieties which are still grown commonly  today, these were introduced by Germany, France and the  Low counties. During the 16 century the gardeners of Germany developed the savoy cabbage .In 17th and16th centuries, cabbage obtained the status of food staple in  England ,Ireland ,Russia and Germany and  pickled cabbage  was commonly eaten by people.

Cultivatoin:

Cabbage plants grow best in the soil which is well-drained and its location is full sunny. They start to grow in protected locations early in the growing season after that they are transplanted in outside but some varieties are seeded directly into the soil from where they will be harvested.Different type of soils is required for different varieties, its range from lighter to heavier clay but fertile ground is preferred having PH between 6.0 to 6.8.Nitrogen level must be enough in the soil.Cabbage grows well in the temperature between 4 to 24 c. Lower or higher temperatures than  recommend temperatures may result in premature flowering. In few climates, cabbage can be planted at the start of cold period and it prolong until a later warm.

  

In 70 days nearly, cabbage reaches to its maturity. Some late varieties mature in about 120 days. Cabbages are considered mature when they are felt firm and solid on touching.

Usage of Cabbage:

Cabbage can be consumed and prepared in several ways .The most common option is to eat the vegetable raw or to steam it .It is also used in pickle. In sub-continent, cabbage is used in salads. Excessive use of cabbage may cause some intestinal problem.
