The potato belongs to root vegetable family. History of potatoes is very ancient.  The potato was first cultivated by farmers in the region of modern -day southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia between 8000 and 5000 BC .It arrived in Europe in 16th century. Now it is cultivated around the world and has become the major crop in many countries.


Potato was introduced in Subcontinent by Portuguese in early seventh century, they called it Batata. They cultivated it along the western coast .Potatoes were introduce in Bengal by British traders by the end of 18th century.





Cultivation

All types of soils are suitable for the cultivation of potato except saline and alkaline soils. Naturally loose soils are preferred because this type of soil has least resistance to enlargement of tubers.

    Potato crop is grown from seed potatoes not from seed in the months of October and November. Potato tubers or pieces of tubers are grown to a depth of 5 to 10 cm, full sized potato take 80 to100 days for maturity.

    80% of potato production of Pakistan is achieved from Punjab. Major potato areas  are :      Okara , Sahiwal. Kasur, Sialkot, Jhang, Narowal, Pak pattan, Gujranwala, T.TSingh, Khanewal , and Lahore. Remaining shares: KPK is producing 9%, Baluchistan 4.5%and Sindh 0.5%

  Potatoes have more energy  than any other popular vegetable and potatoes have potassium even than banana.In the light of above mentioned facts ,we can said that potatoes are a healthy food. Potatoes are use as French fries, potato chips and potato flour. Potatoes are mixed in vegetable based dishes especially in subcontinent. They are eaten in boiled, baked and fried forms generally. Children are fond of potatoes.
